Entry 01st November 2024: Post 1: Norton 360 - facing backwards again.

Norton 360 - facing backwards again.

Been a truly crap couple of days. I am always quite bewildered by
the behaviour of software houses to completely **ck their user
base up.

OK I know I am a bad boy for still using Windows 7, but Norton
clearly state that as long as it is Service Pack 1 you are still
going to get updated. Not my words... THEIRS.

OK right out of the blue I get a major update from Norton which
basically scraps all the previous settings , exceptions and the
like, and to a greater extent junks my Win 7.

I knew something was up when the hard drive went into a tail spin
for over 15 minutes, and still does so when I first fire up the
browser.

Next up CloudFare had a field day with me keep saying ' Wait a
moment ' and asking me if I was human.

On the night of the update I was blocked from various websites
for over four hours.

My software on the computer was prevented from working and I
needed to activate through a Norton interface.

The email has simply gone belly up. I can't even get the thing
to except any exceptions, it just refuses to play ball.

I am slowly trudging through this treacle cess pool that is
Norton 360 trying to regain functionality of my Win 7 machine.

So why do I still use Win7... Simple, it's the least annoying
version that Windows produced that is just about still working.
I cannot get my Adobe Photoshop software that I bought for
over five hundred quid to work with Win10 nor my Thumbs Plus.
And now if I want Adobe I have to subscribe. Stuff that.

Sadly the march toward obscurity is upon me and I'm now in a
very difficult place juggling an out of date OS with a virus
checker that has really abandoned me. I know this to be true
cus I have the same software on the Win10 machine and it hasn't
shown any of these problems.

Currently when I launch the browser the performance monitor
kicks out around half a dozen NortonUI.exe functions and flat
lines the hard drive for fifteen minutes at 100% usage killing
all other activity on the machine.

Never mind, as ever I will sort it out, but its seriously stopped
me from doing anything at the moment. Sorry for that.

U P D A T E

Some days are easier than others. The last week has been a struggle with Norton and the Win7 machine. It appears that the version of Norton 360 recently updated on the Win7 machine has activated a whole load of Windows validation processes that cripple the drive for around 12 minutes on boot as it literally scans the while drive. What is worse is the Thunderbird software will not validate the authenticity of the mailer. I have no problems on the Win10 machine. I assume the validation process is at the core of the OS and the system status is logged more accurately and not requiring of the disc scan on boot. Further, Thunderbird manages the password processes via Windows itself and so the authentication has again already been validated using the primary login password for Windows. Sadly the Win7 machine does not use the primary login of Windows and so halts the process. I have now sorted pretty much everything and am back up and running but it took close on a week to sort it.
