Amstrad PCW9512 - Some days are easier.
Some days are easier than others. The last week has been a struggle
with Norton and the Win7 machine. It appears that the version of
Norton 360 recently updated on the Win7 machine has activated a
whole load of Windows validation processes that cripple the drive
for around 12 minutes on boot as it literally scans the while drive.
What is worse is the Thunderbird software will not validate the
authenticity of the mailer.
I have no problems on the Win10 machine. I assume the validation
process is at the core of the OS and the system status is logged
more accurately and not requiring of the disc scan on boot. Further,
Thunderbird manages the password processes via Windows itself and
so the authentication has again already been validated using the
primary login password for Windows. Sadly the Win7 machine does
not use the primary login of Windows and so halts the process.
I have now sorted pretty much everything and am back up and running
but it took close on a week to sort it.
Anyhoo, my retro chores were a little more simple to manage today
and my focus was on testing the Amstrad PCW machines with the drive
belts to ensure they hadn't locked up.
Couldn't have been easier and the PCW9512, 9512+ and 8256 all booted
reporting no errors. Not bad for a 1987 machine as with the 9512.
You may recall if you read the blogs that my main computer in 1987
was the PCW9512 so I have fond memories of that period. Fortunately
I didn't need a virus checker, the computer was not online and she
never in all the many years of using her needed a software update.
In those days things just worked without external interference.
All three machines required the drive belts to be repaired which was
no small feat given that the drives were trapped behind the monitor
tube for the most part. I am not in the mood to repeat the repair
and so that is why I check regularly that the drives work.
The 9512 still ranks as one of the best computers I have ever owned.
