ScuzzBlog: Diaries November 2024
Entry 05th November 2024: Post 1: Virtual Insanity.
Virtual Insanity.
Is the human race at risk of becoming detached from its own world?
Has the advances in digital communication severed the connection
between humans and the very world around them?
The reason I say this is because of the way the human race now
treats the world that it lives in. It has become a place to view
and record and then dispense its data through the window of the
phone. From what I witness each day the endless stream of images,
sounds, video of everyday things that humans record only seem to
become valid once they are uploaded to the cloud so that others
can witness their lives through the digital format.
I am convinced that an individual would stand in front of the
approaching train and let it charge into them, devoid until the
last that this was anything other than a great video opportunity.
I see lines of people with phones aloft recording events with
only one purpose and that is to share with an invisible world.
and yet the tangible real world simply performs as a catalyst
for video chat and uplink.
The very talented Jamiroquai postured some time back of the perils
of virtual insanity. The group had been struck by a world that
was living underground. The metaphor being that we cannot reside
inside a virtual existence when reality is all around us. I say
all this because there are real challenges for future generations
to deal with that require a firm handle on reality. Not a perceived
reality, not an artificial reality, not a virtual reality. It
requires a connection, a bond between conscious living humans that
are real flesh and blood and not some digital representation of
one. The question that we should all be asking is how much of
what we interact with on a day to day basis is a creation of our
own virtual reality. Has the world that we perceive only visible
when we interact with the mobile devices we possess.
At some point humans will long for the day when they can throw
open a door and take in the air and joy in the company of real
people. It is not too late for humanity to broaden its perspective
and recapture the moral high ground. You just have to resist
uploading it to your telephone.
I apologise for borrowing an image of Jamiroquai and blurring the
edges. It really is a thought provoking song and a video that is
a masterpiece in its own right. I was amazed at the way they
created the illusion of the moving floor. Talented people, go
treat yourself to a viewing on YouTube.
For useless twisting of our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound
For we all live underground
Virtual Insanity.
