Entry 08th November 2024: Post 1: It's goodbye to EAB - Cookie Crunched.

It's goodbye to EAB - Cookie Crunched.

I have a policy of never entering cookie gated sites. These are
sites that restrict access behind a cookie gate. Previously EAB
or the English Amiga Board had a polite notice advising of their
cookie policy, but you could still view the site. However, they
have now locked the site behind a cookie splash banner that
requires you to agree to their usage.

Be aware that the laws that required sites to advise of the use
of cookies never made it a requirement that you accept cookies.
The law simply makes it necessary that sites that use cookies
advise of the their policy and be given the opportunity to decline
the usage. It never said that access would be restricted or blocked
if you did not agree.

Many commercial sites that survive on their advertising revenue
took the opportunity to block users unless they agreed to the
collecting of data via the cookie. The point that I struggle with
is the comfort that is given that data is only shared with trusted
sites and supporters. And yet once in the public domain no matter
how trusted their partner is they have no control of just what
that partner does with the data. It follows 'I NEVER' accept a
cookie unless I am a fully paid up subscriber with a financial
link to the site and means of communicating with them.

I am pleased that sites like Lemon Amiga still let you visit their
site without having to agree to cookies.

Sadly that is the end of EAB and Hall of Light and no doubt The
Magazine Rack. The gated cookie splash screen I will never cross
and so yet another valuable resource is now out of bounds.

It's goodbye to EAB - Cookie Crunched.
