Win95/98 - The period of non-interference.
I have always viewed my interest in computing as a progressive
process, one that by nature evolves depending on technological
advancements. I have always been thirsty for the next best thing,
whilst all the time making sure I make full benefit out that
which I have. I am never wasteful and certainly don't have a
high redundancy cycle on anything I have.
Also I tend to not throw anything away and keep it running even
after it has long since served its usage.
Those that read the blog know of my objection to being force fed
the latest offering by Microsoft. I moved over to Windows 7 in
2011 and have enjoyed a pretty flawless period of computer time.
The computer did throw a graphics card in 2017 and I chose to buy
a Win10 machine as back-up whilst I fixed the Win7 machine. I can
say with a honest heart that the DeLL Windows 10 machine is crap.
I don't believe there is anything wrong with the computer it is
just that Windows 10 is so bad. I mean real bad.
Which brings me to the point of today's blog. There was a time
before Windows XP when there was no real need to use the internet.
The TCP/IP port was generally closed and I only went online when
I decided to do so. I had a little green monitor in the task bar
that filled and flickered each time there was internet activity.
What is more, the operating system wasn't the bloated nonsense
it is today and a simple search for files changed at any given
point would expose any dubious content finding its way onto the
system. I also used CleanSweep to compare time stamps on files
and very quickly eradicate any foreign duplicates.
I had numerous weapons in my armoury to defend my machines and
carried out regular maintenance. It was part of the fun of using
a computer online. During this period I was very comfortable with
just who was in control and who made the decisions about access
to the computer.
In terms of technology I upgraded when necessary but always had
kit to do the job. When I couldn't support the graphics on the
latest computer games I simply went and bought a machine that
could. So when Tomb Raider wouldn't work on the Win95 machine I
simply purchased a PlayStation to play the game. The PS1 was not
an internet based machine so again pretty bulletproof.
I didn't move over to the Win98 machine cus of issues with the
performance of the computer, I simply ran out of disk space. I
had been using SWAP bays and ZIP drives to store files but having
purchased Adobe Photoshop for five hundred and fifty quid and got
myself a scanner I was using so much disk space. The solution was
to buy a Win98 machine and network link them together. I would
within two years buy a new XP machine and use it offline so I
could use the Nero CD burning software. It took till April 2008
before I fully went over to an XP machine only, and only so I
could play World of Warcraft.
I am getting to my point slowly, as ever. My problem is Windows 11.
I have had a taste of Windows 10 and hate it with a vengeance. I
know the world lives in a different lane to me but I exist in an
'APP' free world where I never use my real name. I am not involved
on any social media sites and although Mr Zuckerberg uses his own
name he will never see mine. That is my choice. I choose 'not' to
have a Facebook account, or any of the others. Certainly the very
right wing antics of some media giants, with their thinly veiled
tactics to boost their power and financial status by bolstering
certain political groups has not endeared such platforms to me. It
just makes me ever more suspicious of the webs being woven within
the very fabric of what we perceive as the world wide web. I do not
believe for one moment that the web is property of the people as
it was intended. I truly believe it has been bolted into anything, but.
OK So what am I going to do ? I actually don't know. I have a
sense that acquiring a time machine and going back and changing a
few things isn't going to happen. I also sense that sitting with
a pencil and paper all day long isn't going to keep me occupied. I
do need the internet, if only to organise my supplies. At the
moment my main idea is pretty bonkers. I need a sacrificial load
of crap that I can use for organising my world, say a tablet. Then
carry on with a group of networked PCs including the Win7 computer
but offline. I can even use a console for gaming exclusively.
What I would be doing is actually going back to a time when I was
running the Win95 and 98 machines offline. I know this is not
1995, 1998 or 2011. I accept that times have moved on and that the
world is a different place, but, I say this , in all honesty, having
lived on this planet a long time, the current world sucks donkey
balls. There isn't one system of government that is going to make
the future a pleasant place to be. I seriously wouldn't trust any
one of them further than I could throw them. What is worse is the
amount of horse manure that folk are prepared to consume without
giving it a second thought. Seriously the peoples of this world
are either just plain stupid or so tolerant and or disinterested.
I don't know what it is. No offence.
Suffice to say I am more than pleased for the modern societies of
this world to watch as it implodes on itself, but I would like to
witness this outside of that bubble. So I am determined to become
ever more reclusive, and bury myself deeper down the rabbit hole,
until I hopefully become invisible. At that point I will develop
a trans-warp thermo generator, transmit a power spike through space
and get detected by the Vulcans in hope they will come and rescue
me cus seriously, this planet has gone bat crazy.
Or I just buy a Windows 11 machine and get over it. Probably the
latter. What the hell.
I didn't have anything to blog today so I just waffled on for an
hour. As you do. Anyway... how you doin ?
Sadly yesterday's video didn't work so here we have it again ... Have three
