Amiga 570 CD Sidecar - rebadged.
There is no better an example of the way Commodore mismanaged the
release of their products than the ill-fated Amiga 570 Interface. Not
satisfied with releasing an early version with the incorrect label,
they then surpassed themselves by releasing the product at the very
same time they discontinued the computer it was designed for. More
significantly, the computer replacing the A500/A500 Plus was not
able to support the CD Expansion.
In truth the one thing that should have turned the corner for the
Commodore product range was the implementation of CD ROM on all
their machines. Had the A600 and A1200 come equipped with a CD ROM
they would have been head and shoulders above many of the consoles
and computers of the day.
They had the technology in their hands and simply squandered the
opportunity. I can imagine a lot of Commodore engineers involved
in the CD Interface were crying into their hands the day Commodore
completely buggered that one up.
Anyhoo, reflecting on that incorrect badging of the A690 I was
rummaging through my drawers today trying to find some keys to a
computer case when I came across a small plastic bag with a 570
label inside. Tiny thing I have to say. So I set off to the area
where I store a couple of my 570s and there sitting on each other
were the two that have the badges removed. I do have the other
badge in a drawer somewhere. Probably a glue issue given that
many of the units probably had to be rebadged when they got the
original label wrong.
The sidecars use a special CD caddy that ejects with the CD disc
and sitting with these two units were a couple of the caddy units.
I took the opportunity of better protecting the casings with tissue
before I returned them to the store. I also made a note where I found
the label for future reference.
I am always a little sad when I view the 570, cus it deserved a
better time of it. Not sure how many were sold in the end. They
never feature that often on discussion groups. It is like it just
never happened.
