Amiga 600HD - Day 3.
Having received a very helpful response on Amiga Org regarding
the missing pin to the IDE connector I discovered that Pin 34
did nothing so I could move on.
Today I found an old busted A600 with a partially working LED
and a shorter ribbon for the floppy drive. The floppy itself
wasn't working albeit it clicked to a steady beat.
Opening up the drive I discovered the problem which was the
top read head had sheared off. The upper plate had not been
seated properly and so when the disk was inserted it smashed
into the head. Has always been broken. Sadly that is the way of
things sometimes. This came out of a 600 in a very poor state
when it got here. I finished up replacing most of the insides
and the surplus went in the graveyard.
And so I now have installed the correct ribbon and an LED
light that at least shows the computer is on. The drive is
usable from the cold but not a reset. On a replacement I will
just keep looking.
Just as I finished today I got a tap on the door from postie
and there was my new sealed 2.5" drive all the way from China.
And so tomorrow I will attempt to install the OS onto the 600HD
and reinstate its inner drive. Wish me luck.
