Entry 8th October 2019: Post 01: Amiga 600HD - Aliens are Cool.
Amiga 600HD - Aliens are Cool.
Some years back a fellow group member Andy_B sent me a full copy
of his Amiga 600 hard drive. Andy is a very enthusiastic AMOS user
and had created his own games and programs using AMOS. Up to now
the contents of his drives have sat stored on a couple of CDs.
He was asking yesterday whether I had managed to fix the A600HD
and in responding it got me thinking as to whether I should place
Andy's drive contents onto my recently revitalised A600HD.
And so I set too rebuilding Andy's hard drives.
First up I needed to transfer the files from a CD to the A600 which
did not have a CD drive. My first option was to place the four drives
onto a couple of ZIPs and then plug a ZIP into the A600. To the
Amiga Workshop and I fired up Emma the trusty Amiga 1200 with all
the kit necessary. Took very little time to copy files from the CD
to the ZIP drive and so with two ZIP discs in hand I now needed a
ZIP drive, or more importantly I needed an interface.
I moved to the bench and decided to use the Surf Squirrel. First I
decided to add some much needed extra RAM. I pulled an A601 from
another A600 and plugged in. All was working fine so I then connected
the Surf Squirrel. Sadly the interface needs the A1200... bugga.
I wasn't about to give up and so I retrieved the earlier SCSI Squirrel
that was designed for the A600 and the 1200. With this connected I
installed all the necessary software. And .. nothing. Didn't work.
The Amiga just booted but did not recognise the ZIP drive.
I was so determined that I just moved the 600 to the Workshop and
connected the computer via Parnet to Emma and used the Microvitec in
there. I was well underway in transferring files when as I packed
away the Squirrel I found a piece of paper with a note reminding
me that I needed ReqTools. I checked the 600 Libs and there
was no such tool in the LIBS drawer so no wonder it didn't work.
Too late now as I was well underway with the Parnet feed.
I actually concluded the process in the small hours of this morning
and left the final session to this morning. While I waited I found a
makeshift 'full-stop' key for the 'toothy' A600HD. She was working a
charm. I rebooted a couple of times and already Andy's drive icon
replaced those on the A600HD.
I really couldn't get over just how many files Andy had on his drive.
The AMOS stuff was endless. I changed the names of most of the drives
to suit his, leaving just Work and Workbench untouched.
And so it was complete. The A600HD had now been converted to Andy B's
hard drive contents and was a more fitting way to store the drives
of an A600/AMOS enthusiast's Amiga world. I was quite humbled by the
shear volume of AMOS software and left kinda speechless as I witnessed
the endless stream of files as they were copied to the computer.
I am not sure if Andy still uses his A600. He is still active on the
groups and forums. He has a very healthy attitude to technology and
still loves the Amiga platform.
One final point and directed to Andy ... ' Aliens are cool '.
No Amigas were harmed in the making of this blog.
PS: The memory in the images for the 600 may look a touch low. I had
been running the Parnet and there were a few files in RAM plus I had
decrunched a DataTypes file. After reboot the memory was 1398176.
