ScuzzBlog: Diaries October 2019
Entry 18th October 2019: Post 01: King of the Nerds - Part I.
King of the Nerds - Part I.
It was Leonard Hofstadter in Big Bang that proclaimed himself to
be King of the Nerds. The comedy was almost a parody of all nerds
like me in the world that probably, before seeing others live out
their same ideals, thought they were somehow weird. Weird I guess
and ever so slightly odd, but when you have an active imagination
and enjoy doing stuff, what else are you likely to do.
And so as Big Bang pulled the curtain from the world of the Nerd
I no longer felt my behaviour out of place. Just to list a few
Nerdy things that Big Bang focussed on as example these would be:
Comics, all kinds of gadgets, science fiction, Star Trek, Star
Wars, Anime, computers, figures, Dungeons and Dragons etc.
For me I had had an interest in comics since my mom bought me
The Beano and that was 1964 onwards. I don't have the original
comics as I left them with my parents when I finally flew the
nest, but I do still have all my books from the period.
Comics featured rarely again as I grew up as I found magazines
a rich source of information. I think if I had chosen to collect
comics I would have way more storage space available. Saying all
that I did start collecting comics again, mostly after discovering
Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. This little adventure opened up the
world of Michael Layne Turner who was responsible for the artwork
of Witchblade and Fathom plus Tomb Raider. Sadly Michael died in
2008 and so his covers just dried up.
I think I pretty much exhausted all of what I could drain from
his work which I have to say covered a lot of comics. I even
collected the special editions.
In addition to the comics I also collected the card games which
are similar to the Mystic Warlords of Ka'a" cards played by
Sheldon and Leonard.
I have always been interested in science fiction and watched the
very first series of Dr Who and Star Trek. I was also their on the
opening night of Star Wars. I queued all day to get into see the
Empire Strikes Back. I collected so many packs of cards for all
the various action fantasy programmes, including the full Batman
series with Adam West, Dangerman, Man from Uncle etc and onto
Star Trek for each of the series. I was mad keen on Voyager and
I was gifted a pretty large working model of the ship. Cool.
I guess I liked my science fiction movies and all the cult films
such as Raiders and Blade Runner. And yes I have Anime animation
movies in the collection plus Anime figures. Again all these
subjects were featured on Big Bang.
And being a nerd wouldn't be complete without 'Halo Night'. Not
exactly my most favourite of games though I can understand why
a group would find it more fun than playing on your own.
There you go, we are all nerds at heart and I guess many of us have
collections and memories that are very similar. For me I just never
stopped and so am still a very serious nerd... whether a king I
will let others decide. Anyhoo back to Final Fantasy XIII-3 and
maybe a bit of Big Bang whilst I have my tea.
PS. Barbed Wire ? So why Jessica and Pamela? Closest I could get
to a couple of Bazingas !! Did you know that Barbed Wire is a
remake of the movie Casablanca. I actually like the concept art
of Barbed Wired. I was going to feature Blade Runner but Pamela
just was classic with her one and only line ' Don't call me babe '.
And that other magic line from Jessica Rabbit ' I'm not bad -
I'm just drawn that way '.
