Entry 12th October 2024: Post 1: MINIX or LINUS - UNIX ports for the Amiga.

MINIX or LINUS - UNIX ports for the Amiga.

Time was that I would lurk around the various Amiga forums for ideas
on features for the blog. Often discussions would lead to interesting
subjects that I could research and even maybe add its worth to the
collection, in the form of software and even extra kit. Sadly the
forums of today generate very little in the way of real user queries,
lending more to the electrical enthusiast in the form of repair and
or upgrade options.

It is a fact that whilst many dabble in the hardware few it seems
actually discuss what they do with their Amigas once they have made
all these magical upgrades. Quite possibly the systems are used
mainly for gaming and so little productivity work is a feature of
their activities.

This has led to a pretty barren period for me these last few years
when it comers to interesting subject matter. I have very little
interest in the upgrade and repair side of things and so most of
what is discussed is of no value to me. Consequently I tend to
read old help pages in Amiga magazines of the era and can always
find something of interest that I have never really dabbled with
before. Take for instance this response from Nick Veitch at Amiga
Format regarding a query for a port of UNIX for the Amiga 1200.

And yes LINUS is a thing along with MINIX.

FROM THE PAGES OF AMIGA FORMAT

There was a UNIX port called MINIX which appeared on the Amiga
scene a few years ago. I think there is still a demo of it floating
around at 17 Bit Software. However, this version did not support
hard drives, which was a little silly to say the least.

Anyway the good news is that a new PD UNIX port is to be released
very shortly, going by the name of LINUS. It promises to be fully
compatible, and the fact that it is free will help cushion the
financial blow of the equipment you will need to buy to run it.

You do not need to buy another Amiga, but you are correct in
assuming that will need an MMU. Probably the best solution is to
get an accelerator for your 1200 featuring a full 68030 chip,
such as GVP's A1230 card ( or alternatively you could splash out
on an A4000/040 ).
