Amiga PD - Before I put back the ByteBack.
Sorry for the corny title today, but hey, anyway having disturbed
a couple of my PD disk boxes I decided I would take a few pics of
the contents and remind readers again of the pitfalls of trying to
collect PD disks.
Whilst the intention to collect PD disks is admirable I just have
to say yet again that the challenge is nigh on impossible. Most of
the houses had literally thousands of disks in their catalogue
and only created the disks when requested. It is most likely that
any number of the disks were not circulated and were probably lost
when the PD house ceased operating.
It is worth noting that most disks got duplicated many times over
at the various houses and so many were being carried by any number
of the PD suppliers. The best way to ensure a good volume of PD
disks is to buy one of the CDs from say 17 Bit that come up on
Ebay and just use that as a reference point. You won't go far wrong.
For my part I do have a healthy collection of PD disks and have
examples from most of the more popular houses. Important are the
the CAT (catalogue disks), together with the endless pages of
listing in the magazines. Having a list of any PD house catalogue
gives you the chance to hunt down disks if you are up to the
challenge of collecting at least the disk titles.
I gave up collecting PD seriously almost as soon as I started. It
really is a pointless endeavour if you are a completist like
me. As soon as I realised the enormity of the task I just decided
to duck the challenge.
Anyhoo before I placed diskbox L6 and L8 back on the shelf I took
the opportunity to photograph some of the contents. I also include
a blog I made some years back on the PD collection of 'BestBefore'
which I recorded some of the actual content.
I have over 13500 Amiga disks here and they are all lovingly listed
in one massive text document. All disk boxes are numbered and so a
simple search [ edit:find ] of the notepad document will tell me
which disk box the disk is in. Takes no time to find the disk. Here
are the contents of disk box L6 and L8. Adjacent to these disk
boxes are L5 and L7 and sitting on top of the disk boxes is an
Amiga 1200. L stands for Large.
