Entry 22nd October 2024: Post 1: Amiga Distant Suns - Space is big. Really big.

Amiga Distant Suns - Space is big. Really big.

In the words of the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy, "Space is big.
Very big ..". Nothing demonstrates this better than the software
Distant Suns by Mike Smithwick. For those that know of this little
gem space has never been more revealing than through the Amiga and
any number of revisions to this application.

I was a little disappointed to only find one disk in my collection
and so had to hunt down manual and software. Wasn't hard to find.

I did like the prompt during the install that I was likely going
to have to wait forty minutes for the process to de crunch. It
also warns of memory requirements and screen resolution issues.

Saying all that I was able to launch two versions of the software.
You need the manual as you are given a test of knowledge on aspects
of the solar system to progress the copy protection.

When first entering the night sky you are placed with a view of the
northern hemisphere and centred on the North Star, Polaris. This
mode is known as Planetarium mode with a field of view of stars and
planets. On screen is a control panel that lets you scroll around
the sky and display basic status information.

The project has cult status and even today has a version T+30 years
and counting. Amazing really.

There were any number of astronomy PD disks for the Amiga. I pulled
one at random called Total Concepts The Solar System. This I found
most informative albeit a little wordy.

I did once have a friend with an Amiga that had a large telescope
and who spent a lot of time studying any number of disks they had
purchased for the Amiga. Was actually very popular.

Anyhoo I am sure you have your own methods of tracking down software
and the like so I won't trouble you with my links. Obviously I
disposed of the data once I had featured the software here given
that I have no rights to the disks. As you do.

Distant Suns is bought to you by Virtual Reality Laboratories.

Amiga Distant Suns - Space is big. Really big.
