Entry 26th October 2025: Post : Samsung T240HD - Cold snap killed the monitor.
Samsung T240HD - Cold snap killed the monitor.
I do tend to get my moneys worth out of anything I buy and while
I was a touch upset when the Samsung finally kicked the bucket
yesterday I was pleased she lasted so long. I purchased the
monitor in 2011 to accompany the HP Win7 machine. She was actually
acquired to use with the PS3 but I moved her over to the Win7.
She has only failed once in her lifetime and I paid a repair guy
to collect and fix. Since then she's been fine. Well up until
last year. I'm not a great fan of the heat and it takes me forever
to switch on any heating here. What I discovered last year is if
the temp is less than 14 deg C the monitor will not switch on.
Above that temp and shes fine.
Anyhoo move forward to last week and the temp threshold moved to
17 degrees C. So I had to pump in some heat and she was fine. This
was OK till we had the cold snap the other night. Down to 14 deg
and the monitor refused to play ball. I pumped up to 19 deg and
finally she came on. Sadly I can't be having the heating on just
for the monitor so I decided to swap out for an identical monitor
I bought in Dec 2022 just in case. The monitor is the exact same
all new in its box.
I moved the new monitor into the old monitor location and in an
instant I was back up and running. One oddity is the language for
the menu is in Spanish. Really no need for the menu.
I'm no electrician by I sense there is a capacitor in the busted
monitor that is held high, I think that's what they say, and it
retains its status to switch the thing on. The capacitor is nearly
dry and needs a good heat boost to get it working. Just my thoughts.
This new monitor hasn't been used so I may get a few years out of
her.
I am very reluctant to move on from kit that I am well used to using.
As an example I am writing this blog on my Win7 machine which whilst
I don't use for internet work, still has my preferred software on
such as PhotoShop that MS in their wisdom refuse to let me validate
on the Win10 machine. So I run the gauntlet and keep her online for
her Norton updates and use the software. I'm about to carry out a
full backup for when the Win11 machine arrives.
Fun fact: Recently YouTube changed their policy regarding embedded
videos. Historically I could play videos in my own page creations
which when embedded avoided the tedious adverts. This was useful
for walkthroughs for games if you want to avoid the interruptions
from adverts. Sadly now on the Win10 machine I no longer can
embed videos. However, cus the Win7 is in emergency mode and no
longer updated to Firefox, the embedding still works. Well until
YouTube clock that one and update their systems.
There is another oddity regarding older OS's and YouTube that lets
you avoid their tedious adverts, but I think I'll keep that to
myself. I also get sick of Adobe trying to remove my Flash player.
Just wish they would leave us old codgers alone to trundle along
using out of date stuff. Me, I do it cus I really can't stand
change. I'm a lot like Homer Simpson when he refuses to have new
stuff enter his brain for fear of losing some of his old stuff. I
am not adverse to change, and some new ideas are useful, but the
caveat on that is as long as I can still do everything I use to
do before. My experience is that I tend to lose some functionality.
[ by the way I'm not referring to add blocker ].
I am playing Final Fantasy Rebirth at the moment and cursing it
endlessly. Why they had to butcher my original Final Fantasy VII
in this way is bewildering. Just make a new game for goodness and
leave the old stuff alone. Today's world seems incapable of creating
anything new and recycle everything, but worse.
On that recycling my council decided that they would replace our
two bag system for separate bins. So now I have one recycle bin,
one refuse bin, one food bin, one food bin caddy, one glass bin
and if I want a garden refuse bin. I am not taken to swearing on
this blog but 'are you fkin* kidding me'. World gone mad
I better go before I get dragged into commenting about why I now
need to have a synchronised second device to prove I exist. And
a second device that insists on having applications installed on
them. For why ? You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work
that out. Interestingly I currently hold no legitimate approved
form of identification No driving license, no passport etc. So
whilst I live in and own my own house SONY had problems validating
that I exist. I told them I was an old version waiting for an
update. Confused the sh*t out of them. You'd be amazed how easy it
is to confuse an automated AI validator, when you are not signed
into Google, Microsoft, etc, don't have any social media memberships
and pretty much log in with anonymous made up names from the late
nineties. It's like owning your own Jedi mind skill ..' This is
not the droid you are looking for '.
That was my take on why it's safer never to throw stuff away. Just
take a look at the website. (Grabs PS1 and FFVII).
Back to reviewing possible Win11 computers.
PS: I don't see why I should have to pay extra for a proper hard
drive and an optical device , LAN card and wired mouse and keyboard.
Seriously , how do people even use a computer these days?
