Amiga disks - Unofficially yours faithfully.
In the eyes of a lot of those on Amiga forums I contribute very
little. And the reason why .. well I don't provide any disks on
this website for download. It is a policy of mine not to give
away something that is not mine to give. And so what resides
here, stays here, until it all passes into the control of another.
Nuff said.
One of the things I am very keen to do in maintaining the collection
is to try and keep stuff together that is related to one persons
life using the computer. And so when I was lucky enough to get
disk boxes and collections of disks from a specific individual I
have tried to keep those disks together. What this mean though
is that I have disks that are of dubious origin. So much so that
many of the disk collections I have have almost no original
software and games disks.
Shown here are two examples of a collection from individuals.
The first is two of the disk boxes associated with the Checkmate.
Although the owner had drives full of software, almost all his
disk boxes were filled with copied disks. I appreciate that a
lot were from cover disks, but even so, most were copies. I do
have a number of disk boxes for the Checkmate and the pattern
repeats for all disks. The matter of copied disks is further
supported with the many small notes inside the disk pocket
giving details on how to use the software. This demonstrates
a lack of the original manual.
The table in my small box room which fills one side of the room
is filled with old copies of disks. I have assembled them into
piles of either games or software and grouped certain collections
by the specific Amiga user. One of the collections of disks fills
a whole drawer and I list them below. The creator placed only a
very small label on all the disks and this was the pattern with
them all. Many provide numbers for all their disks. This guy just
wrote the smallest of labels. I know not whether the person had
the originals or how he came about the disks. I have been tempted
to use the disks as the small sticky label would easily come off
but for now I leave this and other collections intact.
And so in conclusion what was the point of this blog. It is odd
that someone like me who objects very strongly to the copying of
disks by what ever means, has in his possession probably one of
the largest collections of copied disks. I am not sure what
percentage they contribute. Over time they have become as important
as anything else here, and as such I now find myself at odds with
the law, for the sake of maintaining these titles. And this is
the argument put to me when I refuse to copy disks for forums.
I have no answer. But then I live in a quite protected circle
in which I work within my own set of rules. And so when I extend
the rule of scuzz to protect copied disks but don't circulate
them, then I guess there is only me that I knowingly has access
and usage of the disks. The point is that once in the public
domain they become any persons property, and that I cannot control.
Clear as mud. Well makes sense to me ....
