Entry 18th September 2019: Post 02: Amiga 500 - Plus a damaged RAM card - Part 2.
Amiga 500 - Plus a damaged RAM card - Part 2.
The computer was first tested without the RAM card to demonstrate
that it was working and what the RAM was registering. Please note
that the motherboard is an A500 and not an A500Plus. The RAM in
the Amiga 500 was reading 338976 which appears about right what
with Workbench 1.3 installed. Also the external floppy drive was
working just fine. So the computer was viewed as OK.
Sadly though the card proved to be a problem, for the oddest of
reasons. It would not fit into the pins from the motherboard. On
further inspection the motherboard appeared high and not to be
seated properly.
Nothing for it but for me to extract the motherboard and reseat to
try and get it level. Note that this is an A500 Rev 6A board.
The problem left me scratching my head as to what the issue was.
Given that I had replaced the board myself I started to question
whether the 500 motherboard works in a 500Plus case. My concerns
were unfounded as one thumb press to the centre of the board
clicked the board into place.
With the motherboard well and truthfully lowered I was able to
connect the damaged RAM board and put the Amiga back together
again.
That moment of truth and I fired up the Amiga with the RAM board
and nothing had changed the memory was still 338976. OK time to
flip the switch on the RAM board and reboot.... Incredible !!!
The memory lifted to 852848 whoohoo . So the RAM board was still
working. Isn't that amazing. I then fired up Space Invaders to
have a play and a test and the computer was running no problem.
So there you go. Never give up on those battery damaged boards.
They can still be working. But do remember to take the batteries
off and clean up as directed by others.
What a wonderful feeling. More Invaders for me ... as you do.

At this point I flipped the RAM switch
The joy of using a 500 in a 500Plus is that
you really have no battery problems to worry
about. The A500 was in existence a lot longer
than the Plus so most games work on the 500.
The OS can be upgraded but 1.3 is just fine.
For me I prefer 2.04 but I can equally live
with 1.3. Either way both are classic OSs.
I guess I could always fit a ROM switcher... Hmmm !!
