scuzzBlog: Diaries September 2019

Entry 25th September 2019: Post 01: Amiga 1200HD/40 and Simon the Sorcerer.

Amiga 1200HD/40 and Simon the Sorcerer.

I have two Amiga 1200 HD/40 from Germany that I purchased faulty
like an absolute age ago. The first has a blue tint to the screen
colour that should be grey and the second has a fault with the
keys to the top row. I had always intended using the best of both
to make a good one, but in truth I just left them be.

The issue of the colour failure can happen with a bad U30 also
known as the DAC (Digital.Analog.Converter). There are a number of
revisions to the chip to suit differing motherboards and highlights
an issue that can occur sadly. It actually doesn't prevent use of
the Amiga but is annoying. I have three 1200s with the problem.

The issue of the keys can be solved with swapping out the keyboard
but neither of these computers are used for anything so as the
faults are not life threatening I will leave well alone. One other
issue is the faulty hard drive on the first machine. Again this
has been the case for as long as I can remember. The second has a
healthy 40MB hard drive and small accelerator. Both have the
German keyboard and have quite shoddy stickers on the base from
repair shops. Both have had a number of issues no doubt.

In respect of Simon the Sorcerer I became interested again in the
game having read the review in the magazine featured for the
Fractal blog yesterday. I decided to dig out another review plus
the cover disk of the game demo. I do have the game though the
original box is in deep storage and I would need to be a wizard
to get it out.

The demo is quite interesting as it introduces itself in game
as a demo. The original 9 disk game starts with asking a question
about images on a compass to make sure you are using the original.
Kinda crude copy protection and I am sure easily gotten around.

Whilst digging out the cover disk I pulled a fist full of other
CU Amiga disks with games on for the period. This was truly a
most pleasurable and rich period for the Amiga, Sadly it occurred
just as Commodore were going bust. The top twenty games of the
day are all classic.

And so I feature the A1200HD/40 having a play with Simon and
a few other games of the same period.

Happy days.
