ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2021

Entry 3rd September 2021: Post 1: Best games like ever - For my Amiga.

Best games like ever - For my Amiga.

It truly is amazing that after all these years I still maintain my
top shelf of my most favourite Amiga games. When fully active on
the A1200 I would buy games by the bucket full but only retain a
modest few on permanent duty. I know instinctively if a game is
going to work with me and I'm rarely wrong. So many games over the
years never got further than five minutes. A couple that come to
mind are Speris Legacy and Robinson's Requiem.

So to explain just what makes a great Amiga game here are my views.

Best games like ever - For my Amiga.

Terminator 2 or T2: The Arcade Game

This was the first game that I purchased
for my Amiga 1200 and it did not disappoint.
I loved the film so being able to relive the
action in a game was just magic. The game is
very simple to get into and you really just
aim 'literally' to do better each time you
try. It really is what arcade is all about
and it so felt like I was in the arcade.

This one really did make my hand ache.

Ishar 2: Messengers Doom

For weeks I was locked into this game. Night
after night solving problems and building my
band of trusty heroes. The game introduced
me to grinding and levelling characters. I
would trudge around the same old streets and
visit taverns and shops that opened only at
certain times and build my resources and character
strengths. Only when I was strong enough would
I take on the challenge.

The story was just so deep and the atmosphere and
music just so intoxicating. Still a big favourite.

Settlers

Simply the best ever game made for the Amiga.
I have spent way too much time playing this
game. It really is a god game with a great
strategy curve. Master your production and
expansion goals and you can rule the kingdom.

Best part is when you take down the final
castle and the whole place just burns down.

Cannon Fodder

Breaks my heart losing men in the field and
this game pays respect to the fallen. The small
intro you get to start each level just fills you
with anticipation. It isn't just a shooting game
it really does involve strategy and planning
your activities.

Sensible always fooled you into making the game
a fun fest whilst cleverly disguising the games
true serious and addictive game play.

Seriously... ' Never had so much fun '.

Cannon Fodder 2

Nearly as good as the first.

Universe

A game that I have never played. In truth I have
spent so many hours playing and yet am convinced
I never even scraped the surface. I could never
understand how such a barren moon could have such
hidden story quests. Talk about scratching your head.

Frontier Elite II

A game that I probably should never have purchased.
The wall chart of the known Elite universe was fixed
to my wall for decades. I still to this day have not
fully explored its worlds. If you want an immersive
game that uses all your brain power then this is it.

Hired Guns

Seriously crap game.. Well that is what I first
thought. Eight hours later without a meal break
I realised I was hooked. This game has never been
off my Amiga hard drive. Takes a while to get
into the game but once you have mastered the
skill levels required you wont be able to put
the thing down. Great intro music and game
build up. Some cracking effects.

Beneath a Steel Sky

Takes like forever to install on hard drive so
never take it off. The game is a very good story.
It does a very good job of painting the world
in which you operate and you do feel you are
making a difference. Problem solving on a
most demanding level and simply hours of fun.

I love games I can just come back to and then
trudge on a little more. Worth every penny.

Flight of the Amazon Queen

Another problem solving adventure. This time
though with a decided fun twist. A great story
and excellent challenges. The travelling about
at times was a little tedious but it made sense
in truth given the subject location.

Valhalla and the Lord of Infinity

Vulcan for a few years seemed to be the only
Amiga torch bearers. I always think of late
dark cold winters nights tucked up with my
Amiga and this little guy solving problems.
'INCREDIBLE'. I can't praise this game enough.
It really does need a keen interest in solving
stuff and an ability to recall all that you
have seen and read ... ' Smells like a drain '

The game has voice interaction as the character
talks to you telling you of what is going on.

DreamWeb

This game screws with your mind cus you never
really feel comfortable with your character. Was
he a good guy or a bad guy. Sends you quite mad.

A very clever game interface and surprisingly
detailed given the small window on screen. There
really isn't another game like DreamWeb. It
stands out as an Amiga classic.

Alien Breed II

You can see the evil that lurks beyond, so the
trick is knowing what and how to defeat them.
The action can be a little daunting at times
but with a gazillion hours under your belt
you should be able to master each level.

Another magical musical composition and mouth
watering graphics. Again a classic.

The Chaos Engine

Just read what I wrote for Alien Breed and
superimpose it here. Not one but two very
similar styles of game that just keep you on
edge of your Amiga keyboard. Quite stunning.

Nuff said.

Banshee

This game took me back to my River Raid days on
the Atari Woody. A cyber Steam Punk feel to a
most enjoyable game. You fly over enemy positions
and avoid the cross fire and take the things down.
The fun part is not knowing what is coming next.

Desert Strike

So popular this game and so easy to get into.
The intro music is some of the best in any game
The operation of the 'copter feels responsive
and your challenges are fun though sometimes
pretty suicidal.

Incredibly well produced and a fun war shooter.

Uridium 2

Feels like I have been playing Uridium my whole
computer life. It truly best represents all those
space sci-fi challenges as a lone craft taking
on endless fighting challenges. It really never
got any better than this. Still intoxicating.

Syndicate

Your mission is to get in , do the nasty and get
out. Tiny characters that just grow in your minds
eye as you traverse the challenges to take down
your goals. It can be nerve racking at times.

Another game that I played way too much.

Sensible World of Soccer

The best soccer management game like ever.

I have built teams and guided them to the
top of the European Championship and enjoyed
every minute. The game lets you play totally
on simulation so you never have to play a game
with the joystick.

A perfect game to have ticking away in the
background whilst you do other things.

With Settlers, probably the only retro game that I
have never tired of on the Amiga.

Sensible Soccer

Should have been called the joystick killer. I do
believe I qualify for a rebate on the game for all
the broken joysticks this game cost me. I did like
saving all my best goals and watching them over and
over and over and over and over.

Jet Strike

Reminded me of TTL on the Spectrum which I played
to death. I sense this is a personal favourite
that others wouldn't enjoy so much. But taking
the plane 'uptee-up' and then 'downtee-down' and
crashing at the slightest mistake kinda is fun.
I certainly have never laughed so much
playing a game.

Sim City

After playing this game for hours on end I
started seeing wired squares on everything
I looked at. I felt I could simulate my entire
world. The cities I created became real places
that I knew intimately. Works of art.

This is a genius game and way too addictive.

Elvira

Seriously any game with Elvira in is just fine
with me. All I see is the very lovely Elvira
and my heart melts. Nothing more to say.

Just love her.
