ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2021Entry 11th September 2021: Post 1: Serial killer - A4000d modem.Serial killer - A4000d modem. I had intended doing a feature on this article regarding networking Amigas, but when I discovered my old modem lurking in the bottom of a drawer as I searched for a network cable, I was reminded just how this modem had been party to me losing two Amiga 4000s. It was whilst using this modem with my first A4000d that the Amiga died on me. I had been active on the Amiga groups and the computer was my primary machine with communicating with the various Yahoo groups. But she died suddenly and I have never been able to find out just why. I had moved my operations to the Workshop and set up with the same modem on another A4000 that I had salvaged and replaced the main motherboard. This too however developed issues with the internet. I gave up with the set-up and moved over to a US Robotics on the Amiga 1200. I had forgotten in truth that it was this modem that I had been using, and was reminded, simply cus I recalled the label I placed on the power plug. Earlier this year I did some tests and further research on the circuits on the 4000 and discovered the serial burnt out on the A4000. What I also discovered was that there is pin on the port that takes sound to the Amiga. There was various comment on the groups about the reason for the sound connection on the Amiga as nothing supported this. The thing is the modem that I show here is a 'voice' modem and maybe that was the reason for the sudden loss of the one Amiga 4000 and the failure of the port on the other. I had no such issues with the US Robotics which I used for a good period with the Amiga 1200. It is strange how time plays tricks on the memory as I had thought it was the US Robotics that I used on the 4000 but realise it was not. Maybe this modem was the true 'serial killer'. Anyhoo... I feature also the magazine article that was intended for today's blog but not fully used. It carries with it some very useful information about networking which may be of use. I also feature a couple of adverts of the day which relate to recent topics in blogs. Maybe I'll get round to finding the cable I was looking for and return to the networking some time in the future.
