Entry 15th September 2021: Post 1: Amiga 4000d motherboard exhumed.
Amiga 4000d motherboard exhumed.
I ventured deep into the storage tubs and retrieved this Amiga
4000d motherboard that I removed from a computer back in 2006.
Sadly I don't have high resolution images of the board prior to
its removal so cannot really compare body parts.
I purchased the Amiga 4000d broken back in the day. The guy was
a little surprised when I picked it up that I wanted a broken
computer. He had advised at the time of purchase that it had been
stored in a garage for years and had been broken for for a good
time.
I sourced a replacement motherboard which has subsequently failed
due to capacitor issues, and so I thought it would be an idea to
check and see if the original board had deteriorated in the same
way. And so I extracted the board and took some pics.
Amazingly none of the capacitors on this old busted A4000d board
had failed in the same way. The replacement board was from the
States and had been treated with some kind of clear lacquer.
Although the battery area was corroded, as it was in the day, the
remainder of the board looked fine. I am guessing that a clever
electrical repair guy could fix the old board. Really don't know.
Good to know I have a spare albeit the original broken board.
Anyhoo the board has been buried once more and lost to the tubs
never to be seen again. The daughter board looked real clean. It
is a shame these machines were fitted with the battery. It probably
was responsible for killing so many of the A4000 Amigas.
