Entry 19th September 2022: Post 1: Textcraft - Requires an Amiga 1000.

Textcraft - Requires an Amiga 1000.

The little sticker on the front of my Textcraft software states
that it needs V1.1 Kickstart Operating System, no less. That will
give you some idea of the date of this software. It also is V1.1
and comes in Amiga colours so I assume it was released with the
Amiga 1000, making it all a little academic.

Annoyingly this software really does need an Amiga 1000. I tried
it on a 500 and a 1200 and the mouse pointer does not appear. I
had the same problem with some early Amiga 1000 games.

Saying all that the software is pretty advanced for its age and
has a nice crisp feel to it. I do like the way the early Amiga
software manuals are designed to slip into folders. It makes it
so much easier to reference and means you can grab a few pages
and lay them out on the desk as you type. The later hard spines
smaller books as with the A1200 are pretty useless as reference
documents, as you just can't keep them open. Or you finish up
breaking the spines.

To make it work on a 512K machine you have to copy and save the
file. Also there is no support for a second floppy drive and the
software insists you disconnect the external drive.

Textcraft was developed by Arktronics Corporation and also
Commodore-Amiga and dates from 1985.

The Textcraft manual starts by saying ' If you've never used a
computer before , or if you're a bit apprehensive about using one,
read all of this manual'.

Anyhoo I was simply grouping all my A1000 folders together and
realised I hadn't featured the software particularly well in
the past. For those that ponder why I photograph, pretty badly,
pages from books instead of scanning, it's my way of helping the
reader whilst at the same time encouraging them to get a copy for
their own use. It kinda is a nod toward copyright issues by not
making a true copy of a document.

Hope that all makes sense. The software really has only historical
value to the collector, if you are interested in early Amiga
software. There really are way better word processing packages
available for the Amiga.
