A590 - The magical sound of the Amiga.
When I read on modern forums of folk giving up on their floppy
drives and internal hard drives for Goteks and flash drives I
am always saddened. I am saddened cus I find it difficult to
imagine an Amiga without the sounds of both of the hard and
floppy drive. To me they are the heart and soul of the Amiga
and what makes the computer special. For so long I have used
the activity of both as a way of understanding just what is
going on with the machine. They have become so interwoven into
the fabric of the Amiga that to deny their existence, as true
and very audible mechanical features, is to deny a very significant
part of the computer itself. Modern solutions are silent and
so to me are heartless. They do not make for the true Amiga
experience.
So today when it came round to checking my computers that I have
permanently set up in the upstairs of my house, I was again
moved by the activity of the A590. This magical wonder pulsates
with Amiga goodness as it goes through its boot process. The
Amiga 500 that it is attached to just wouldn't be the same without
those distinctive noises. Without them I would never be sure the
computer was functioning as an Amiga. Added to this once fully
booted into the Workbench we get the steady tick of the floppy
drive. I cannot rest in my checking process until I get sounds
from both that all is working as it should.
And so I made a little video of the A590 booting up, cus after
all these years of powering up that tiny XT drive it still works.
I am only able to confirm that the computer is functional when
I hear the boot sequence and watch the little yellow light.
The A500 sits in the disk room where I have my massive collection
of floppy disks and games. The desk is filled with boxed cover
disks, and to the rear are shelves of games and software disks.
The monitor is a Commodore 1084S and she sits on a Workstation
unit purchased for the A500.
And so I did the rounds and all were working. I hurriedly captured
some pretty blurred images of the other machines as I didn't have
the tripod to hand. You get the idea.
Sorry for the fuzzy pictures: Roll call number 2.
