Entry 5th September 2025: Post 1: Amiga 500 - Finding a good text editor.
Amiga 500 - Finding a good text editor.
I tend to feel a little guilty reaching for CygnusED every time I
use a text editor on the website. It's not that there isn't a rich
number of text editors out there for the Amiga, it's just that for
me none can compete with the simplicity CED offers together with
the vast array of editing tools.
In my efforts to create my own Workbench disk I decided to put CED
to one side and see what else I could use that was suitable. For
this I ventured onto the Fred Fish Archive and sorted through 1000
disks and with the help of Aminet I downloaded a good number of the
listed text editors.
Having tried them all out I can honestly say that with the exception
of EdWord I don't believe any of them came even remotely close to the
functionality of CED. I appreciate that these were PD based editors
and not commercial products, but the test has to be at least that the
software works as a basic text editor. For the most part they failed
to compete.
If you want to check them out for yourself I show the list. Just do
a search on Aminet and decrunch the LHA file and have a play. I
was hoping of finding an editor of a small size to fit on my disc
but I failed. So for now CED will have to be used as a separate disk.
