ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2026 Entry 14th September 2026: Post 1: Atari Portfolio - Battery replacement. Atari Portfolio - Battery replacement. The Atari Portfolio was not actually created by Atari. The pocket PC started its life back in the UK at a company called DIP Research in 1985. Whilst DIP is said to stand for Distributed Information Processing it also stands for the initial of the creators David Frodsham, Ian Cullimore and Peter Baldwin. All three were former employees of Psion. They created the DIP Pocket PC in 1989 and offered it under license to be manufactured by other companies. Atari took them up on the offer and rebranded it the Atari Portfolio. The pocket personal PC ran on an Intel 4.92 MHz 80C88A processor; had 128Kb of RAM memory; a monochrome LCD ( no backlight ): 40 characters x 8 lines and 240 x 64 pixel display. The unit could accommodate 32Kb, 64Kb or 128 Kb RAM cards housed in the side of the unit. The question recently asked was what batteries were used for the pocket pc. Whilst I had featured the battery for the memory card in an old blog I hd failed to give details on the three AA batteries needed to fire this thing up. Anyhoo I dragged the little beast out which having fitted the 2016 Lithium 3V battery to the memory card back in 2017 hadn't been used since. Suffice to say the battery some nine years old had now become drained. The card was not recognised ..... DUH Moment I don't think I've had a 'DUH Moment' before. Anyhoo with all the photographs uploaded to the website and no chance of adding more without setting up on the bench I realised whilst writing this that when I bought the batteries in 2017 I bought 2. So I just hot footed to my battery collection and sure enough I had a spare 2016. I fitted the battery to the card and like magic it worked. I now have 125952 bytes disk capacity on a: just as I did before. I have included the pic from 2017 to show this. I am amazed. At first I couldn't open the battery tray cus Google told me the clip to the side of the tray was a write protect switch. DUH ! I just knew it had something to do with the tray. You press it in and slide the battery out. All done, I am so pleased. I can play with DIP-DOS now. Classic. OK back to the original question and the three AA batteries. There is also a power connector which Google advised and told me about the center positive. Voltage 4.5 DC up to 5V . 300 mA center positive. Barrel Size standard 3.5mm x 1.35mm DC Plug. I'm off to play as John Connor from Terminator now who had one of these. Trust me they are super cool. PS: DIP-DOS 2.11 is a compact MS-DOS compatible operating system and is stored in ROM and supports standard command line instructions. ie: CD: DIR: COPY: DEL: MD: Creates new directory RD: Removed directory REN: Renames a file TYPE: Displays the text contents of a file on screen CLS: Clears the text from the screen DATE/TIME: VER: version OS, VOL: HELP: OFF: Kills Terminator. Format: You access the Text Editor by pressing the APP key , the red Atari logo and Editor and Fn and F1 to go to file manager. Thats enough for today .... Atari Portfolio - Battery replacement.
